Wine in Trinidad Carnival and Unwind in Tobago

The best way to fully experience the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago is to participate in the sinful pleasure of Trinidad Carnival followed by the serenity of a Tobago resort or beachfront hotel.

I recommend you leave Trinidad on Ash Wednesday (February 22, 2012) and fly or ferry to Tobago. However, the flights to Tobago on February 22 are sold out but February 23 is still available. The airfare is usually just USD$48 return. Book online with Caribbean Airlines. There are 5 flights still available for February 23: 3:30 pm, 5:35 pm, 6:15 pm, 7:30pm and 8:45 pm.

The ferry is TT$100 return for the fast ferry or approximately USD$15. You can get tickets in advance from the various travel agencies listed here or buy your tickets on the same day at the terminal. There are 2 express ferries on Ash Wednesday from Port-of-Spain, the first at 10 am and the second 5 pm.

A good option is to take the ferry to Tobago on Ash Wednesday and return with Caribbean Airlines.

My two favourite places to stay in Tobago are Coco Reef Resort and Blue Haven Hotel.

Coco Reef Resort (www.cocoreef.com) is very close to the airport and allows you quickly enjoy the private beach. I love the pink buildings and the superb service. Get a massage at the spa to help your body heal from Trinidad Carnival. The Coco Reef Resort has a 7 night minimum in February and the rate is approximately USD$323 per night for double occupancy including breakfast. Fodors review. TripAdvisor reviews.

Blue Haven Hotel (www.bluehavenhotel.com) is a short walk from a secluded beach on Bacolet Bay.  The beach is downhill which means you’re walking uphill with your weary Trinidad Carnival legs when you return to your room. Blue Haven Hotel has a very European feel to it but lack some of the services of larger hotels. The cheapest room is USD$238 per night. Fodors review. TripAdvisor reviews.

Who can beat this vacation – wine in Trinidad Carnival and unwind in Tobago?
